Life After Divorce Course Series (Provo) Week 7

LIFE AFTER DIVORCE COURSE SERIES:

Cost: The cost for the 7 week course series is $99. For individuals who would like to attend a single session the cost is $15 per class. Class Titles:

Class #1: Picking Up the Pieces: How to Begin the Healing Process

Most people don’t get married with the expectation that their marriage will end in a divorce. Yet, almost one out of every two Americans has their hopes and dreams of “happily ever after” dashed to pieces. In this first of a seven part series, you will learn how to deal with your shattered dreams. You will also learn:



  • how to create a new climate where you can grow and develop
  • how to use your resources (internal and external) to help you through the healing process.
  • four steps on how to feel whole again
  • how to find light at the end of the tunnel


Class #2: Getting Rid of Old Baggage

Divorce is something that never ends. However, in this class you will learn how to get rid of unnecessary baggage from your past so that it doesn’t weight you down. Unresolved issues often lead to problems such as depression, self-pity, vengeance, wounded pride, debilitating memories, and much more. In this class you will learn:



  • how to effectively deal with the painful memories and other common problems associated with divorce
  • how to take responsibility for your actions and move on
  • how to stop depression before it sinks too deep


Class #3: Believing in Yourself

Whether you have been divorced one or more times, learning to believe in yourself and your ability to make relationships succeed is critical to your ultimate relationship success. This class will teach you how to believe in yourself. You will come to see the power of your beliefs as they relate to your sense of self and your relationships. In this class, you will learn:



  • how to find the “real” you again
  • how to achieve legitimate high self-worth
  • the ten most common reasons people don’t believe in themselves and how you can avoid these traps.


Class #4: Breaking the Cycle of Unhealthy Relationships

Wait! Before you start dating or get too serious, learn how to break the cycle of unhealthy relationships. In this class you will learn the five essential tools to help you avoid the pain of another bad relationship. Learn how to:



  • identify the “red flags” in relationships
  • evaluate your relationships for what they really are
  • communicate effectively
  • take a stand for yourself in relationships
  • create a safe climate in your relationships (you will learn how to assess the climate in every relationship).
  • problem-solve the most difficult issues in relationships (learn the differences between how men and women solve problems and what you can do about it)


Class #5: Dating After Divorce

Are you are ready to date again? Or are you worried about making a mistake? In this, the fifth class of the Life After Divorce series, you will learn how to effectively re-engage in the dating game. Did I say game? In this class you will learn:



  • how to assess your own strengths and weaknesses in dating relationships
  • whether your relationship style is conducive to a long-lasting relationship
  • how to date with more confidence
  • how your expectations can make or break your new relationships


Learn how to increase your Dating SmartsTM so that you can be an intelligent dater. Successful people know what it takes to make their relationships work. In this class you will be given these tools.

Class #6: How to Achieve Real Intimacy in Relationships: Learn to Bond in Ways You Never Thought Possible

Are you lonely and frustrated in your relationships? Learn how to achieve a deep and intimate relationship. In this class you will learn:



  • how to create a deep relationship connection by applying five fundamental principles in your relationships
  • the essential elements of intimacy in relationships.
  • the secrets of making your relationships last


You will learn the tools every successful relationship has. You will learn to how to bond the right way. Ironically, you will simultaneously learn how to bond the wrong way. In this class you will be given the foundation stones that make relationships successful.

Class #7: How to Avoid the Pitfalls of a Difficult Remarriage

Whether you are looking to get remarried or not, you need this class. Do you know that 75-80% of all people who divorce remarry? Unfortunately, every 2 out of 3 of these remarriages end in divorce. Do you know the top two reasons they fail? In this, the seventh class in the Life After Divorce series you will learn:


  • how to avoid the most common pitfalls remarried couples fall into
  • how to prepare your children for remarriage
  • the elements that make remarriages last
  • five reasons why remarriage is more difficult than a first marriage


You can protect your new marriage from ending up as a negative statistic. Even if you aren’t getting remarried soon, you can help yourself and others with the information that is in this class.

Parenting Through a Divorce and Beyond

Parenting is never easy. This is especially true if you have been divorced. In most cases, divorce severs the boundaries between parents and their children. Many children are asked to take on extra duties and responsibilities. Due to this life-changing event, many children learn to play one parent against another. In this class, you will learn how to parent your children through your divorce and into new relationships. You will learn:



  • how to establish and maintain healthy boundaries with your children
  • how to maintain a close relationship with your children—even if you are being attacked by your ex-spouse.
  • what your children need most from you during and after your divorce
  • the ten commandments of step-parenting


The Instructor:
Dr. Kevin B. Skinner received his Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Brigham Young University. He received a master’s degree in the same field from University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Certified Family Life Educator. He has taught classes on marriage preparation, marriage and family relations, parenting, and family life education at Brigham Young University and University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He currently works as the supervising therapist with GrowthClimate Therapy Services. Dr. Skinner is married and has four daughters.
