In addressing groups of women who have been victims of domestic violence, I frequently begin with this question:
“How many of you, in accepting the proposal for marriage from your prince charming, were anticipating a short-term relationship punctuated by violence, manipulation, putdowns, non-value, coupled with an emotional climate of fear?”
Not one hand has ever been raised! When I ask what they had HOPED for, the responses universally are that they had hoped for a long-term marriage, a marriage based on deep love, mutual value and respect, a relationship of warmth, friendship, loyalty, trust, and the assurance that they would be safe. What virtually every one of them got, however, was heart-wrenching!
The partner who had emerged for almost every one of these women, in many cases IMMEDIATELY after the marriage, was a person they did not know at all. Instead of the kind sensitivity that had been displayed during the dating and courtship relationship, there was cold indifference; and instead of the promised freedom to make decisions and to focus on individual goals, there were demands for total submission, compliance and conformity to whatever the spouse wanted and demanded.
[Let us hasten to add that men who have experienced domestic violence—and there are more men than you might imagine—report almost the identical abuse patterns as those experienced by women! Men are also tend to be far more reticent to speak out.]
